How 5% cash-back credit cards work
To earn 5% cash back, you need to activate bonus categories every quarter. Once activated, you can earn 5% cash back. Chase offers activation reminders for your calendar and email alerts. Alternatively, you can activate bonus categories by providing your last name, the last four digits of your card number, and your zip code.
There is a limit to how much you can spend in bonus categories each quarter to earn 5% cash back. Once you spend a combined $1,500 in these categories, the cash-back rate drops to 1%. This limit resets every quarter.
All purchases outside of bonus categories automatically earn 1% cash back. To maximize your rewards, consider using another credit card for spending outside of bonus categories so that you can earn more than 1% cashback.
